Renewable electricity generation is booming in California. Renewables periodically provide over 70 percent of the electricity on the state’s grid. Yet in February and March carbon emissions associated with generating grid electricity were higher than they were in 2017.
The explanation lies in how climate change affects energy generation. It’s been tough to use hydroelectric power to even out energy supply from intermittent solar and wind in a state that’s been suffering from epic droughts.
Grist has the story. As they conclude, this all points to the importance of better batteries.
